Her mother, who is Eritrean but was born in Ethiopia has raised Rubi Benton. As her father was adopted, the biological grandmother of her paternal family is Japanese. There is an older sister named Scarlette and a younger sister known as Coral. She spent a year living in Geneva, Switzerland. She moved from Switzerland to Atlanta in Georgia in her senior year. She was a student of political science at Georgia State University. She grew listening to Prince Michael Jackson Biggie Marvin Gaye Chaka Khan and Marvin Gaye.
